Shadowgrams is a device of semiotic sabotage: it takes images from everyday circulation, intervenes on their surface and their data layers, and returns them to Instagram to interfere with the mechanisms that classify them. A digital image is not only what appears on screen. It is also a file composed of data, read by algorithms that classify it, tag it, and condition its circulation. Each image is intervened across four layers: pixels are altered to shift the reading of classifying algorithms; critical texts are hidden through steganography; its metadata is rewritten; and instructions aimed at the AI systems that analyze it are embedded through prompt injection. Shadowgrams does not correct the algorithmic gaze nor replace one classification with another: it destabilizes the very act of classifying. Each photograph thus operates as a political-technological artifact: a surface of desire, an archive of power, and code in dispute.
